England - North York Moors to Scarborough

The Alum industry got going around 1600 and was mainly used to fix dyes in textiles. The Alum was extracted from quarried shales in a complicated process of burning and leaching which took many months to complete. The last Alum works on the Yorkshire Coast closed in 1871 after they worked out how to make synthetic alum.
